REC Classification

A REC is a Renewable Energy Certificate. A single REC equates to one megawatt (MWh) of renewable energy generation. Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are typically classified in three classes or tiers (Class I, II, III or Tier I, II, III). These classes or tiers denote the type of renewable energy source (i.e. solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, landfill gas, fuel cells, hydro power and cogeneration). Class and tier specifications can change from state to state and could be transferable. Other common names for RECs are alternative energy credits, environmental credits, green tags, and tradeable renewable certificates.
