An Expected Shortfall of SRECs keeps prices firm above $650

New Jersey Solar Renewable Certificates SREC remain firm with prices steady above $650. This is for the spot purchase of 2009 vintage SRECs. These certificates are needed by electricity producers in
New Jersey to fulfill their RPS. If they do not buy enough SRECs they must make a payment to the State of New Jersey of $711 for each certificate they do not buy.

New Jersey requires electric producers to produce an increasing percentage of solar each year or buy SRECs from entities who did produce solar. The difficulty in finding long term contracting for SRECs slowed installations going into last year. That factor alone was expected to create a shortfall of solar. Now the added economic strains of the recession along with falling energy prices have put a further dent in installations thus exacerbating the shortfall.

The Flett Exchange trading platform has four large buyers willing to pay $645 to $650 for vintage 2009 SRECs. Numerous sellers are scale up selling from $660 to $680.
